The opposition party has a WhatsApp group for the press called “SF media notifications”. It is used to notify the media of press conferences, photocalls and press releases.
Sinn Féin has defended changing settings on a WhatsApp group to prevent journalists from typing messages or asking questions in it.
On Monday, a member of the Sinn Féin press office changed the group’s setting to “allow only admins to send messages to this group”. Of the 87 members of the group, five are admins. All five of these people work in the Sinn Féin press office. Similar groups are run by the People Before Profit, the Social Democrats, the Labour Party, the Green Party and the Fianna Fáil press offices.
When asked by the Irish Mirror why the settings had been changed to prevent journalists from sending messages, a Sinn Féin spokesperson said that there were alternative ways to contact the press office.
