A sinkhole, which has formed near Banff, Alta., has closed a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and is causing traffic to be diverted through the town.

The Town of Banff said the sinkhole has caused all eastbound highway traffic to be detoured at Norquay Road into town.In a social media post, the Town of Banff said the sinkhole has caused all eastbound highway traffic to be detoured at Norquay Road into town, left at Railway Ave., down Elk Street to Banff Avenue and north back to the highway.
A sinkhole has formed on the TransCanada Highway 1 in the eastbound lanes between the Norquay Road Exit and the exit at Compound Road to the #Banff Industrial District...The town asked people to stay away from the detour route to allow transport vehicles to move through safety. The town asked motorists not to exit town on Norquay Road — and added that engineers are on site to determine temporary solutions and long-term repairs.
