The Surété du Québec reported that McGale’s car went off the road on Montée Odellstown in Lacolle at 2:45 a.m. Sunday, hit a tree and the car caught fire. McGale was stuck in the car and had to be removed with hydraulic cutters. He was taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he died a few hours later. McGale co-wrote half of the songs on Traversion, several in collaboration with noted Quebec lyricist Pierre Huet, who also wrote for Beau Dommage.Article content “When I think of John, I think of Lindsay Buckingham,” Huet said in an interview Tuesday. “His music was very catchy, very melodic. There were choruses with real hooks. To be crass, he made Offenbach more commercial with his melodic guitar lines. He was very inventive. He brought a sense of melody to Offenbach’s heavy rock. Everyone agrees that Traversion is Offenbach’s best album and John had a lot to do with that. He really changed the band.
