Trigonometric functions have many applications, but at root they're about how to move with care and rigor from one vantage point to another, writes our columnist
At a recent conference, I was given a sandwich wrap for lunch, and it was cut at an angle to display a bigger cross-section of the filling. When I unrolled it to get rid of some of the bulky tortilla, a beautiful piece of math appeared: The cut edge wasn’t a straight line but gently undulated up and down to form a sine wave.
Unfortunately, for many of us the terms sine and cosine are associated with memorizing endless formulas in trigonometry class, which makes it hard to appreciate their mathematical importance....
