District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp reveals how he blends the video game's 'simulated-reality' with real life in his movie, Gran Turismo.
Sony's upcoming Gran Turismo movie will blend gaming and real-life experiences. Based on the acclaimed PlayStation video game franchise of the same name, the coming-of-age racing film is inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough. When offered the chance to take part in a real professional race, the avid Gran Turismo player wins a series of video game competitions to live out his dream.
“I was trying to think of a way to connect this kid who plays Gran Turismo in his parents’ house who, in real life, ended up racing at Le Mans. I tried to bring some of the virtual Gran Turismo simulated-reality into reality, almost subjectively from his point of view. Like, this is how he remembers it, and how that overlays into the real world. That was one of the ideas that I wanted to inject into the script, and the way that we shoot it.
