On a Thursday morning in March, the opening of a new department store in the Halifax Shopping Centre was big enough news that hundreds of people waited in line to get in.“The support and interest and excitement that having a retailer like Simons come to Halifax and the Halifax Shopping Centre, you could feel it this morning. It was wonderful,” said Stephanie Schnare, the mall’s marketing manager.
Simons spent $20 million to open its 17th store in the country and expects to employ 150 people here. “We’re confident that Simons Halifax will become an important destination for customers to discover inspiring products,” Bernard Leblanc, Simons president and CEO, said in a release.Simons was founded as a dry goods store in 1840 in Quebec City, and now has 10 locations in Quebec, including the company’s head office, three stores in Alberta, one in British Columbia and two in Ontario, in addition to the Halifax store.
Schnare said decisions on what stores are appropriate for the Halifax Shopping Centre are not being made in anticipation of large residential developments slated for nearby.
