From Indigenous celebrations thousands of years ago, to today\u0027s turkey and stuffing, the October holiday has brought people together.
The origin of Thanksgiving in Canada isn’t completely clear. Indigenous Peoples marked the fall harvest with prayer, dance and potlatch thousands of years before colonial settlers celebrated. In 1578, it’s believed, privateer and mariner Sir Martin Frobisher was the first European to celebrate “Thanksgiving” with his crew. The meal was decidedly less glamorous than today’s feasts: mostly salt beef, biscuits and mushy peas. The locale, too, was less inviting.
Good memories of holidays often stem from meals and time spent with friends and family. For me, the following is a favourite Thanksgiving meal and moment. In the early 1990s, I took part in a local outdoor-activity club. Among other pastimes, we’d hike, cycle and cross-country ski. The highlight was always Thanksgiving weekend. An eager group of about 50 would travel to Vermont and rent several cabins in the woods near hiking and biking trails.
