Fine Gael leader Simon Harris was speaking in Galway ahead of his first speech as leader at the Fine Gael ard fheis on Saturday evening.

Simon Harris has said that he “does not fear Sinn Féin” and is ready to debate them on housing and other issues.

Asked by the Irish Mirror if he thought he could compete with Sinn Féin when it came to an issue like housing, Mr Harris said that he is not afraid of the party as he slated some of their proposals.“I think Sinn Féin will need to start convincing people that they're actually going to try and fix the housing crisis rather than just keep talking about the housing crisis,” he said.

Mr Harris will become Taoiseach on Tuesday in the Dáil and attention will turn to who will be in his Cabinet and what roles they will have. He added: “Cabinet reshuffles are both lonely and difficult. We have a limited number of people who are eligible to serve in the sense of running in the next election. I need to work my way through that in the coming days.”
