It became the unlikely home for the Open when Golf Canada determined it needed more Toronto locations for its national championship, which is sponsored by Royal Bank, whose head offices are in the city.

Golf Canada wanted new locations for the Open. It looked at the spectacular Beacon Hall. It inquired about the Lambton Golf and Country Club. It wanted a location in the actual city proper of Toronto, where only four Opens have been held in the past 50 years — all of them at St. George’s.Article contentGolf Canada looked at the other facilities in contention. The thinking was: “We’re comparable.”

Golf Canada came and surveyed the facilities. RBC came and did the same.
