Experts gathered for a press conference on Thursday to discuss the steps needed to eliminate viral hepatitis from Alberta.

Hepatitis C, although there is no vaccine, is curable by taking highly effective treatments for eight to 12 weeks.

Simmone D’souza, a PhD candidate at the University of Calgary researching the development of new therapy therapies for Hepatitis B treatment, said Alberta has developed a comprehensive framework on sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections which has forwarded planning health care services affected by viral hepatitis.

“We really have no idea how many people are becoming infected each year, developing liver disease or dying from viral hepatitis on a year to year basis in Alberta,” said D’souza.Article content According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, in 2020 the opioid crisis claimed the lives of 4,395 people in Canada, equivalent to 12 opioid-related deaths per day. Experts say the numbers are only climbing.
