Siksika Nation is challenging a provincial government decision to move the Ghost Dam downstream, alleging a lack of consultation and potential infringement on their treaty rights.
Siksika Nation is pursuing legal action against a provincial government decision to relocate the Ghost Dam downstream after it says the province failed to consult with the southern Alberta First Nation. The First Nation is planning to fight a government decision on a dam project that it says broke promises to take its concerns into account. Siksika is seeking legal recourse because it claims the province did not adequately consult with them before making the decision.
They argue that the move impacts their treaty rights to the water supply. Siksika Nation Chief, Crowfoot, wrote a letter to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in September expressing their 'deep disappointment' with the government's announcement. He stated that 'The Siksika Nation will strenuously oppose this project with all resources and means available to us,' unless the government demonstrates a clear commitment to working with Siksika to understand the potential impacts of the new Ghost Reservoir project on their treaty rights to their reserve lands and water supply
