In just a few days, Crossrail will finally open — Julian Glover goes inside the decade-long project, that many doubted would come to fruition
will be a far bigger moment for London than the passing joy of the 2012 Olympics. To be fair it’s cost a lot more than the Olympics, and taken longer, too.. At 6.30am on Tuesday, May 24 — in time for the platinum jubilee — the first sleek trains, almost double the length of the ones now on the Tube, will set off from Paddington in the west and Abbey Wood in the east.

The new London Tube map for Crossrail is an abominationOnce upon a time, London’s tube map looked like, well, a map, with street names and geographical accuracy and all that jazz. But then, a young draughtsman named Harry Beck realised that, when you’re underground, geography doesn’t matter: all you need to know is the order of the stations and where the lines connect.
