A pair of studies published today found that shutdown orders helped prevent roughly 60 million Covid-19 infections in the U.S. and prevented approximately 3.1 million deaths across Europe

The study utilized an"econometric" model to estimate how 1,717 interventions, such as stay-at-home orders, business closings and travel bans, impacted the spread of the virus in six countries

The estimates suggest that, without certain policies in place from the beginning of the pandemic in January through early April, there would be about 60 million more coronavirus infections in the U.S. and an additional 500 million total infections across all six countries.A, estimated shutdown measures, such as lockdown orders and school closures, saved about 3.1 million lives in 11 European countries, including 500,000 in the United Kingdom.

,"the study had some limitations, including that available data on infections and measures across the countries were limited, and the study can only suggest estimations about what could have happened.
