If no deal is reached today, should Lamar Jackson keep negotiating a contract extension with the Ravens in-season? FrontOffice33 | RavensFlock
It’s worth acknowledging Jackson reps himself and lacks professional representation. Jackson’s No. 1 priority should be to secure his future in Baltimore, especially given his physical play style and unique skill set. So although it’s admirable that Jackson signaled his intention to wrap up negotiations prior to Sunday’s season-opening contest against the New York Jets, Jackson shouldn’t be hesitant to carry discussions throughout the regular season should no deal be reached by Friday.
Jackson is likely anxious to avoid the potential distraction regular-season discussions would welcome, but that should concern the Ravens more than it does Jackson. Jackson would have little to lose by attempting to negotiate a contract during the season. Would Jackson forfeit leverage if such a distraction negatively impacts his play? It’s an unlikely outcome anyway. Jackson is a professional that’s well-suited to handle the pressure. The Ravens have more invested in avoiding a distraction.
It’s almost unprecedented to witness a franchise quarterback of Jackson’s caliber enter a contract season. Jackson isn’t guaranteed a single NFL dollar beyond this campaign. The quarterback market exploded this offseason. Three quarterbacks signed deals that exceeded $165 million in guaranteed money.
