Rotary Arts Centre CEO David Smallwood believes west coast could replicate the capital city's success story
West Street is one of the Corner Brook’s busiest streets. - Diane Crocker/SaltWire Network - ContributedCORNER BROOK, N.L. — Does Corner Brook need a pedestrian mall?Smallwood, a long-time city resident and board chairman and chief executive officer of the Rotary Arts Centre, is wondering if Corner Brook should look at the model St. John's has used to create a pedestrian mall on Water Street and do something similar on Corner Brook's West Street.
Even it if couldn’t be an all-day thing, Smallwood said it could start in the late afternoon and go into the evening and night. “We have a patio, but it’s pretty limited where we are on a sidewalk, and we are turning people away all day, every day, that want to sit on our patio. If we could extend that, that would be pretty cool.”
She also recognizes that traffic could be an issue as taking away vehicle traffic on one of the city’s busiest downtown streets could be a downfall. Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons says it's disappointing that the city's winter carnival won't go ahead in 2022. - Diane Crocker
