Should Canada be worried about a sixth wave of COVID-19? Three experts weigh in COVID19
It’s hard to get any kind of grasp on exact numbers. There’s an old saying in medicine that if you don’t take a temperature, you can’t find a fever. With less testing than at virtually any point during the pandemic, “it certainly makes you wonder if the hope was that, by stopping to look for it, it won’t be a problem,” says Montreal infectious diseases specialist Dr. Matthew Oughton. “Except that’s not the way a pandemic virus works.
The reason not to worry is we have a lot of people who have been vaccinated and a lot of people who were already infected with Omicron. By now we’ve probably got, in Ontario at least, somewhere between four to five million people who have been infected with Omicron. That’s a third of the population. We’ve also learned previously, that’s not sufficient to protect us.
But we’ve gone away from a culture of testing. Governments have dissuaded the public from getting tested. They’ve made it very difficult to get tested, really, across the country, and yet they want people to get treated. Governments are trying to sort this out. I think what we’ll see emerge over the next couple of weeks is very simple guidance for getting tested, and clear guidance once people are tested on appropriate actions, including treatment.Dr.
Face masks unquestionably work well to protect both those around the mask wearer, as well as the mask wearer him- or herself, and yet, here we are. We’ve selected an arbitrary date of April 15 . When faced with increasing cases, to me it would be a very good idea to reassess that policy. Viruses don’t follow schedules. They don’t follow calendars.Article content
