SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Shōgun episode 9 director Fred Toye breaks down that violent ending with the Shinobi and how it sets the stage for the finale. Serving as an adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel, Shōgun follows a series of lords and ladies in feudal Japan as they battle for power following the death of the Taikō.

“What was really important to me when I read that sequence and I was trying to kind of figure out how to present it. I felt as though action in this particular series has, both in the writing and in the execution, been done in a kind of very subtle way. Like we weren’t going for action pieces. That if you become a student of this era, you know the Edo period begins after that, and her role in that experience was massive. And that her sacrifice was for a much greater cause.
