John Ashton and Brenda Hutchinson have been preparing for a conference that will be held in September to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Ship Hector. With the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Ship Hector quickly approaching John Ashton and Brenda Hutchinson are busy preparing a conference they hope will offer helpful information to both locals and guests from away.

Hutchinson said she’s heard of many people who are planning to come to Pictou County for the celebrations, many of whom have no direct connection to the Ship Hector per se. Sept. 9 will offer a full day of genealogy and local history speakers and will include a keynote speech by local historian John Ashton and a presentation on the 1923 Hector celebrations. In addition to that, there will 12 afternoon talks on a variety of topics such as: immigration from Highland Scotland to N.S., old gravestones, adventures with www.findagrave.

The conference will also feature a vendor market which will showcase genealogy organizations. Vendors will have books for sale and local artisans will sell other items of interest. “One of the things that is really interesting is where these people we’re making contact with are from – California, Florida, Oregon, just everywhere,” Ashton said. “There are connections all over the place.”
