A birthday party at a Macon, Georgia park turned into a shootout early Sunday, wounding 12 teenagers. No arrests have been made, but investigators have persons of interest and expect arrests in coming days.

A birthday party at a Georgia city park turned into a shootout early Sunday, leaving 12 teenagers wounded, authorities said. The gunfire broke out shortly after midnight at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said at a news conference.

A group of young people had gone to the park to celebrate a woman's 18th birthday after they were kicked out of a home rented for the party several hours earlier, Davis said. At some point, another group arrived at the park and a confrontation unfolded between the two groups. Both groups exchanged words, brandished firearms and then began firing at each other, Davis said.

Surveillance Video Captures 30 Second Eruption Of Gunfire

Surveillance video from the park captured an eruption of gunfire that lasted about 30 seconds as people fled the scene. Deputies who responded to the park learned that victims had already been taken to a nearby hospital in personal vehicles. One 19-year-old male, four 18-year-old males, five 17-year-old males and two 18-year-old females were treated for gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff. Two of the wounded were listed in critical condition, while the others were stable, Davis said.

There is no indication that any of the individuals injured at this time participated in the gunfire, Davis said. No arrests were immediately made, but the sheriff said investigators had several persons of interest in the case. Deputies impounded four vehicles that had been used to bring victims to the hospital and three other vehicles that were left at the park, for a total of seven impounded vehicles.

Sheriff Promises Heavy Police Presence To Secure Arrests

Investigators also interviewed 10 witnesses as they worked to determine how the two groups were related to each other and what prompted the hostilities. Davis said there would be a heavy police presence in some places over the next few days as arrests are made. There is going to be some heavy police presence in some places coming up over the next few days as we make some arrests in this, Davis said.

The shooting was one of two violent incidents reported the same morning. In Detroit, police responded to an after-hours strip club where an argument led to gunfire, killing three people and wounding four. No arrests were immediately announced in that case.
