A shelter worker who witnessed the attack on Kenneth Lee in Toronto in 2022 testifies about the victim's condition and the actions of the teenage girls involved.
A shelter worker who intervened in a violent assault on a homeless man in Toronto two years ago testified that the victim, Kenneth Lee , had blood pouring down his face but didn't appear to be in immediate danger. Melissa Alexander, who was wrapping up her shift at a temporary shelter near the scene of the attack on December 17, 2022, told the court she heard commotion and saw a group of girls kicking, stomping, and spitting on someone.
Describing the scene as resembling predators attacking their prey, Alexander said she pushed the girls off Lee and saw him crouching on the ground, his face covered in blood. Some other shelter residents identified the man as Lee. Alexander said she attempted to question the girls as they walked away, asking them to explain their actions. She then flagged down a nearby ambulance and reported what she knew about Lee's condition. Alexander testified she was shocked to learn the next day that Lee had died after undergoing emergency surgery. Under cross-examination, she stated there was no indication that Lee was critically injured at the time, adding she would have acted differently if she had thought he was in immediate danger. Alexander denied seeing any weapons, such as a knife or scissors, during the incident. The court has heard that Lee died in the early hours of December 18, 2022. Prosecutors allege the youngest of the two girls on trial is the one who fatally wounded Lee, but have not yet specified when or how. The court also heard that this girl was found with two small scissors and a pair of tweezers when she was arrested. Last year, three other girls accused in the case pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and one to assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. Two other girls are scheduled to face a jury trial this May on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter, respectively.
