A newly built dory is lowered from the building loft at the Shelburne Dory Shop Museum in the summer of 2021. The Dory Shop Museum is marking its 40th anniversary in 2023. KATHY JOHNSON - Kathy JohnsonSHELBURNE, N.S. — On June 16, it will be 40 years since the Shelburne Dory Shop Museum was officially opened by Prince Charles and Princess Diana during a Royal visit in 1983.
“We are greatly looking forward to coming up and working with Milford. He’s a great fellow, and building dories is always fun. And Shelburne is such a delightful place to visit,” says Brad Dimock, one of the American boatbuilders who will be visiting. "Our hope is to produce a small book on Milford and the Shelburne Dory tradition. When published it will be offered for sale at the Dory Shop and various boaty places in the U.S.”
"It will have a lot more of the background history of the dory shop, more about the people that made the dory so it will be worthwhile,” she says. The search for an apprentice master builder to replace Buchanan when he retires, is also showing promise, says Mahaney. “The time is right to do this, to touch on the fact that probably half of the Loyalists who arrived in Shelburne brought their own slaves,” said Mahaney. “It’s estimated that half of the population were slaves or indentured servants when the white Loyalists arrived.”
