Until brands start tackling overproduction, the issue of fashion waste may persist.

. There, massive bundles of textiles come from the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and China. Some are sold as is, but many end up lining streets and beaches, burdening local communities.

This problem is what Liz Ricketts of the Or Foundation dedicated her life to changing. After working as a designer and stylist, she realized that the fast fashion model dominated the fashion industry everywhere she turned. So she made a change. "I began things that were destroyed on photo shoots, and that became a way for me to maintain my practice but not use any new materials," she tells. She also started asking questions about waste and why there was so much production in the fashion industry. "I found that most brands knew far less than what they didn't know," she explains.Ricketts then started an image consulting company for the visually impaired, where she worked with a fair trade brand in Ghana.

Soon after this experience, Ricketts started the Or Foundation to change the conversation from "voting with your dollar" and buying marginally more sustainable clothing to resisting the buying cycle we've become accustomed to altogether."' It doesn't matter how much organic cotton you have or how much-recycled clothing you have if there are too many clothes on the planet and no systems to deal with that," she explains.

"We did a three-year participatory research study within Kantamanto documenting the waste flows, the debt levels, the labor, and the different creative practices that happen within the markets," Ricketts continues. "We looked at the larger ecosystem in terms of colonial history. The government relations, waste management infrastructure within Ghana, who funds it, what the specific challenges are for managing textile waste for the city of Accra.
