Effort seeks greater efficiency in face of fierce competition for health care workers, slimmer margins
Facing the same financial headwinds that have recently stymied the entire medical sector, Sharp HealthCare is moving forward with a reorganization plan that consolidates executive leadership under a regional strategy.
“I think about it in two ways, both in driving of consistency and in finding those operational efficiencies and also, in a way, being more nimble and able to make quicker and more active decisions,” McClain said. Sharp is also creating a new “Chief Nursing Executive” role to be occupied by Susan Stone, who holds a doctorate in nursing science and formerly served as chief executive at Sharp Coronado. Dr. Amy Adome, Sharp’s senior vice president of clinical effectiveness, will become the system’s first chief clinical and transformation officer.
These resources, McClain said, are evidence of a new reality in health care: With so much competition for a dwindling number of workers, providers will increasingly need to grow their own. Sharp, like the vast majority of health care companies in the United States, is currently experiencing more budget turmoil than it has in years, with its most-recent disclosure to bond holders indicating that it had a $1 million operating loss in its fiscal third quarter. Though the enterprise is still $32 million up for the first nine months of its fiscal year, it’s a slim margin for an organization with an annual budget of more than $4 billion in 2021.
