Staffers like Geo Dinoso of the Contra Costa and Solano Food Bank have seen a massive increase in demand for free or cheap food, fueled by the pandemic and inflation.

CONCORD — When Geo Dinoso travels around Solano and Contra Costa to distribute food to thousands of people in need, it’s easy for him to appreciate how, as a young man, he was on the other side of the line.

“I learned that just because I’m not accustomed to asking for help it doesn’t mean it’s wrong,” he continued. “Asking for help, it’s a sign of strength. I carry that in the way I act, especially in my current position.” “Some months have been more than 300,000 people,” said Cassidie Bates, public affairs manager for the food bank. “We anticipate this need to be there for at least three to five years. When we look at data in the recession of 2008, it wasn’t until three to five years after that we saw the number of people with food insecurity level back out.”
