'I was in a place where I had no choice but to just surrender and let go of my career.'
Speaking with the publication, Shailene shared that while filming, she struggled with "a deeply personal, very scary physical situation." Although she didn't detail or specifically name what the situation was, she did describe being "very, very sick," and shared that she had to rethink future career moves. "I said no to a lot of opportunities because I needed to get better, and those jobs ended up going peer of mine who I love," she said.
The actor continued, noting that many had shamed her for saying no to these opportunities, but at that time, she was uncertain about what the future might look like for her.
Shailene's willingness to discuss a period of hardship is definitely courageous, and as she acknowledges, taking time for your mental health is an important part of improving your overall wellness. Ultimately, one has to do what is best for them, and if taking time away from work or using a spare moment to prioritize your mental health is needed, then that's OK.
