The ice cream shop owner, a first-generation immigrant, said she was unaware of the broader context of the event.
"They only used the parts they want to show," Kim said of the edited video on Instagram."The customers were scared, kids were crying and I don’t think they posted all of that."
Protesters immediately challenged Kim for comparing broken windows to police killings, specifically the death of Keita O'Neal, an unarmed suspect. Kim said that she and her husband — both first-generation immigrants from Korea who came to San Francisco in 2006 — did not understand what, exactly, protesters were saying as a result of a language barrier. Kim said her husband's English is worse than hers is.
When SFGATE more fully explained the broader context to Kim, she said she does not believe broken windows are equivalent to police killings. She said that she and her husband originally believed the protesters were mad that police weren't policing hard enough, which is why her husband mentioned the break-in.
