Marlins 2, Giants 1: Carlos Rodón struck out 12 batters over five innings and limited Miami to only one run. But, gifted brilliance by Rodón, neither the Giants’ bats nor their bullpen could …
SAN FRANCISCO — Carlos Rodón took the mound for the first time at Oracle Park Saturday afternoon to “Rooster,” the seminal grunge track by Alice In Chains, and fired his warm-up pitches with the top button of his jersey flapping in the breeze off the San Francisco Bay. As he walked off of it for the final time after the fifth inning, he leaped and pumped his fist and soaked in the standing ovation from fans who witnessed one of the most marvelous pitching debuts in franchise history.
The Giants mounted one scoring rally to ensure Rodón wouldn’t be saddled with the loss but couldn’t muster another after the Marlins plated the go-ahead run off Jake McGee in the seventh inning. Two games into the season, the Giants bullpen has already surrendered the lead twice, including Friday after Camilo Doval surrendered a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning.
With 12 strikeouts in his Giants debut, Rodón joined elite and exclusive company. The only other pitchers to match that number in their respective debuts were Juan Marichal and Cliff Melton — and both pitchers needed nine innings for the total it took Rodón just five frames to reach. Of his 12 strikeouts, 11 came via swings and misses. He got six with fastballs, five with his slider and even broke out the curveball he has been refining to get the center fielder Sanchez looking to lead off the fifth inning.
