Giants will rely on Roberto Pérez, Blake Sabol after Bart lands on 10-day IL with ‘very small’ strain in his back.
NEW YORK — Already facing a flurry of competition at the catching spot, the road for Joey Bart only became more difficult Sunday, as the Giants announced that the former first-round pick had been ruled out until at least midway through their upcoming homestand.
In the meantime, the Giants gave Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol his first start behind the plate Sunday — with right-hander Ross Stripling on the mound — and they will rely on him and veteran Roberto Pérez, who started the team’s first two games, to split the catching duties. Kapler said they haven’t discussed adding another catcher, such as Austin Wynns or recently signed Gary Sánchez, to the roster.
