Sewing: Emotional toll of miscarriage eventually gives way to joys of fatherhood for this dad
Courtesy of Karissa RendonIf there is one thing Homero Rendon has a learned as a father, it's that his little boy Xavier is watching his every move.
"He's in the copycat stage, so you really have to be careful what you do because he'll pick up anything that I do or say and run with," Rendon said."You want to keep a straight line, but that's hard to do. I'm going to make mistakes."Rendon, 34, and his wife, Karissa Rendon, 37, also have a 2-month-old daughter, Mila.
"I think we both were scared the entire pregnancy. We prayed every day that he would make it, and we couldn't relax until we knew he was born healthy and safe," Homero Rendon said. After his birth, Rendon said he could finally relax and focus on being a dad, the type of role models his dad, Hector Manuel Rendon, and his late grandfather, Salvador Salazar, were to him — solid, loving and present. Salazar died in 2020 from COVID complications.
"My dad always told me, 'You're not going to learn bad habits from me.' So with my own son, I want to make sure I don't transfer any bad habits. I want to be affirming and help instill good values in him. So that when he grows up, he's able to make right decisions when we're not there," Rendon said.At home with his wife, two children and an energetic rescue dog named Lily, Rendon has settled into fatherhood — the routines, the noise and the laughter.
While Mila is too young for father-daughter plans, Rendon is already mapping out adventures with Xavier.
