The heat wave is expected to end with an overnight low of 10 C.
Environment Canada issued two special weather statements on Monday, July 22: A severe thunderstorm watch and an air quality alert.
First, the possible storm: "Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and torrential rain," the weather agency states. "Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
As for the air outside, it's wildfire smoke. "Smoke is widespread across the province," states Environment Canada, adding that significant improvements are expected in smoke concentrations over the next 24 hours as westerly winds move across the province moving smoke east."The fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk," the special weather statement reads.
The heat wave is expected to end as temperatures drop to 10 C with rain Monday night and Tuesday's high being 19 C with a mix of sun and cloud. After an overnight low of 8 C, expect a Wednesday high of 21 C with a chance of showers.
