Seven workers have reportedly died in a fire that broke out in the Nandan Denim factory in Ahmedabad, India on Feb.8.
, the bodies of the workers were recovered between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The cause of the fire is unknown; however, the report says that the factory was not ventilated, and that there was only one exit on the first floor, accessible only by ladder. The, which owns the factory, are in custody for "culpable homicide and negligence."
The factory is one of the leading producers of denim, and its retailers reportedly include Zara, Target, and Ralph Lauren. According to Laura Gutierrez, the South Asia Field Director of the Workers Rights Consortium in Washington D.C., inspection issues are likely a part of this problem.
