Longtime Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board member, and former board president, Kathleen Mack is not seeking re-election this year. BRECKSVILLE, Ohio – Seven candidates are seeking three seats on the Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board this fall, and only one of those candidates is an incumbent.

The other school board candidates are newcomers Roger Bundy, Eric Drexler, Lisa Galek, Merri Gunzler, Samuel Lupica and Eva O’Mara. Here are profiles of each candidate. The race is nonpartisan, meaning the candidates are running without partisan labels. However, their political affiliations are included here to provide additional background for voters.

“I believe my experience and leadership are needed now more than ever. The current board has 37 years of experience. If three new board members were elected, the experience level would drop to eight years. Couple this with a superintendent who just started a few months ago and you would have significant continuity challenges. Public education is vastly different than the private sector and new board members usually need at least a year to find their footing.

“I’m deeply involved in our school community as a parent of children enrolled in all three of our buildings—elementary, middle and high school. This firsthand experience gives me excellent insight into the needs and challenges of our students across the district, allowing me to effectively advocate on their behalf.

“What truly distinguishes me is my consistent attendance at in-person board meetings for the past two years. I’ve done this to learn more about board member roles and responsibilities and understand our district’s most critical issues. Serving on our Board of Education is difficult, but I’m stepping forward to take on this challenge because I love our schools, and I’m deeply invested in our community’s success.“Parents asked me to run so I am running for the kids and for you.

“I am not a radical and have no hidden agenda. I am a concerned mom with two kids in the district who was asked to run. I promote diversity, equity and inclusiveness. I am a supporter of public education. I am pro-teacher and pro-teacher unions. I will collaborate with our superintendent and fellow board members and always champion for our district. Most importantly, I’ll be accessible to you.”“I am a lifelong resident of the Brecksville-Broadview Hts.
