Lugo pitches 8⅔ scoreless innings for first time in his career; Soto sets career high with 34th and 35th home runs of season
Seth Lugo fell one out shy of a complete game shutout, Juan Soto hit two home runs and the Padres beat the Giants 4-0 Tuesday night at Oracle Park.Soto has turned whatever time remains in the season into a showcase.Tuesday was the second time he has hit two homers in the past nine games, and his 10 home runs in September are tied for most in the major leagues.
Soto put the Padres up 1-0 in the first inning with his 34th home run of the season, tying his career high set in 2019. His two-run homer in the seventh made it 4-0. The Padres scored in the third inning on Brett Sullivan’s single to left field, Xander Bogaerts’ infield single, a throwing error and a groundout by Ha-Seong Kim.
Lugo had never in his previous 63 career starts gone even seven innings without allowing a run. He departed with two runners on and two outs in the ninth before Josh Hader struck out Wilmer Flores to end the game.
