announced that she will retire from tennis—and, in her words, evolve into the next phase of her life—after this summer’s U.S. Open. The 40-year-old has won 23 Grand Slam titles over the course of one of the sport’s all-time-great careers, but spoke of the increased pressure she’s felt since becoming a mother and wanting to grow her family. “Something’s got to give,” she said.
“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” Williams said, noting later that she’s ambivalent about retirement. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.
