How safe are Halifax's bridges? | SaltWire #halifax #harbour #safety #newstodayAs the snow melts, many seniors will be eager to get out into the fresh air and wake their gardens up for a new season. Gardening and yard work are great ways to connect with nature and get several hours of weekly physical activity. As a result, they can have a positive impact on our mental, emotional and physical health.

Before the gardening season gets too ramped up this year, I wanted to share my best physio tips to help keep you safe and happy in your garden all season long. There are many gardening tools designed to minimize strain on the body. They often feature long handles and comfortable grips. Long-handled tools help you maintain an upright posture, which reduces bending, reaching and twisting. The proper use of these tools can often prevent gardening-related back and shoulder pain.

Larger grips on tools reduce strain in the hand and wrist; this is particularly helpful for those with osteoarthritis in the hand. Larger grips also reduce the strain on the forearm muscles, making it less likely to develop tennis- or golfer’s-elbow while gardening. One of the key movements to do ergonomically in the garden is lifting. This is important for both heavy and light objects and can protect the lower back and neck.

Gardening is a wonderful activity with many health benefits. Taking these few simple steps throughout the season should help you enjoy your time out there and avoid the need to see a physiotherapist. Of course, if you want personalized tips on how you can work more comfortably in your garden, your physiotherapist could be a great help.https://www.zoomershealth.ca/articles/take-care-while-carrying/
