The cost of sending a parcel through Canada Post this gift-giving season is going up.
Canada Post has been tacking on fuel surcharges for nearly 20 years as “a standard industry practice,” due to the fluctuation of fuel prices and their changing impact on operational costs, Canada Post spokesperson Phil Rogers told the Star.“We apply a fuel surcharge to all parcel services, on top of the parcel shipment base rate,” said Rogers. “We are directly impacted by changes in fuel prices and make every effort to ensure the surcharge reflects current fuel prices and market dynamics.
For U.S. and international shipping, the surcharges are lower, at 11.25 per cent and 23.75 per cent, respectively. Canada Post did not respond to an inquiry why the surcharge is less for international shipping. Shippers or retailers are likely to be more affected by the fuel surcharges than individual consumers, who can get free shipping if they buy enough online, said David Macdonald, senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
“Instead, they work hard to find savings elsewhere and might even look to other delivery options from smaller local or regional delivery providers. Where available, free store pickup is a great option for customers,” she adds. “Retail is one of the most competitive industries in Canada.”
