Progressive Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard wants to know why there are no Black men in the Senate, and has been using her platform in the Chamber to repeatedly highlight that absence, raising concerns that unconscious bias is at play. “ Representation really matters,' said Bernard in a recent interview with The Hill Times. 'We, as Black women, we’re insiders in terms of race, we’re outsiders in terms of gender.
” Following individual assessments, the board “convenes to deliberate and make its decision, with care to mitigate any unconscious bias,” read an emailed response from the Secretariat.
