The Senate approved a bipartisan resolution Wednesday to reinstate the dress code after widespread displeasure with Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer for relaxing the attire requirement in the august upper chamber.
The resolution by Sen. Joe Manchin, West Virginia Democrat, and Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, was approved with unanimous consent to reinstate a business attire requirement on the Senate floor.
The approval of the resolution also codified the previously unwritten rule that senators and staff must dress in business attire in the Senate chamber. “The United States Capitol is more than just a place of work — it serves as a symbol of freedom and democracy to the world,” Mr. Romney said in a statement. “Hard work was done, and sacrifices made, to ensure that our legislative branch of government wasn’t just housed in some tent. As senators, we should demonstrate a high level of reverence for the institution in which we serve—and our attire is one of the most basic expressions of that respect.
The return of the dress code means that Sen. John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democratic who had become the poster child for the new relaxed dress code, now must hang up his trademark hoodie and gym shorts and now don a suit and tie. Mr. Fetterman responded to the news with a statement that just included a smirking photo of actor Kevin James from the sitcom “King of Queens” which has become a popular internet meme.
