BREAKING: Senate approves new coronavirus aid bill with nearly $500 billion total for businesses, hospitals and testing after Congress and the White House reached a deal. The measure next goes to the House.
FILE - In this March 20, 2020, file photo Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of N.Y., speaks to reporters as he arrives for a meeting to discuss the coronavirus relief bill on Capitol Hill Washington. The Trump administration and Congress are nearing an agreement as early as Sunday, April 19, on a $400-plus billion aid package to boost a small-business loan program that has run out of money and add funds for hospitals and COVID-19 testing.
Two conservative Republicans, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., voiced opposition, but they did not halt passage. Schumer said post-midnight talks among leaders of both parties and top Trump administration officials produced a breakthrough agreement on the package. The Maryland Democrat insisted that proxy voting is “no substitute” for traditional roll calls. But he also wants to go further by opening committees hearings to remote ways of doing business during the crisis.
