Retiring Sen. Richard Shelby called Trump an “interesting guy,” but “different” and who is likely to face strong competition from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. See more of Shelby's comments on the future of the Republican party here:
Nov. 15, 2022, 9:50 p.m.Retiring U.S. Senator Richard Shelby said while he believes Republicans have a good shot at the presidency in 2024, it could be with someone other than former President Donald Trump.
“Politics is here today and gone tomorrow for everyone, including President Trump,” Shelby said. “He’ll either get stronger or get weaker. There are a lot of potential Republican candidates out there. There is one sitting down in Florida who has the potential to be a real challenge to him. sees that. That’s why he’s taking shots at him, which is a good indication .”
Trump has support in Alabama among members in Congress. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, earlier on Tuesday, said he believes Trump is ready to step into the presidency and “doesn’t have to learn the ropes.” He added, “I always ran my own race. I never ran on the Trump ticket. I didn’t run against the Trump ticket.”
“It looks like the House will flip, which is a partial success,” Shelby said. “I never thought we had a sterling chance to take over the Senate. We had two-thirds of the seats up to defend. We had some candidates; I wished we had others . You read about them. I think the quality of the candidate matters, and the intensity of campaigns matter.”
