After wavering over Neomi Rao's nomination and abortion views, freshman GOP Sen. Josh Hawley on Thursday supported her nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, clearing her way to confirmation on the Senate floor in the coming weeks.
Thought by many to be a Supreme Court nominee in the making, Rao won support in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday on a party-line vote with the support of both Hawley and Sen. Joni Ernst , both of whom withheld their support until right before her vote.After raising concerns about Rao's views on abortion earlier this week, Hawley said he would not support nominees just because they are backed by Republicans and said he would press nominees on how they interpret the Constitution.
“I am committed to vetting every nominee that comes before this committee,” the Missouri senator said. “There are some inside this building and outside of it that would prefer I would do as instructed and go along to get along. … That is not going to happen.” Hawley met privately with Rao on Wednesday afternoon to press her on her judicial philosophy, and he said that Rao told him that “she would interpret the Constitution according to its text.” Several members of the committee defended Hawley for probing Rao’s views intensely, even as he caught flak from the Wall Street Journal editorial board and
