Mayor Jyoti Gondek has placed herself at the forefront of the \u0027no more protests that I don’t like\u0027 movement.
Last year, siding with residents of Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood who were sick to death of weekly anti-lockdown protests, Gondek argued “the disruption this community faces is not a ‘protest’,” but rather, she claimed, “a parade” — and thus it needed the proper permits.
that protests against drag shows for families aren’t actually protests because they’re not protesting against government policy — a definition she seems to have made up out of whole cloth.Article content “These are not peaceful protests. This is hate,” she wrote — yet another false dichotomy, with no definitions attached. “We cannot tolerate hate masked as protest.”
I understand why politicians don’t get this. They rarely have any incentive to get it. By the looks of it, Gondek’s crackdown freelancing is quite popular among her supporters — including Beltline residents and LGBTQ activists. But the latter, in particular — all progressives, really — should be acutely aware of the future consequences they’re inviting by supporting Gondek’s agenda.
