Timothy Malone graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston and then sold wines for a high-end East Coast distributor. Two decades later, he is making wine for the highly regarded Appassionata Estate and J. Christopher Wines in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
He’s a native New Yorker who was selling J. Christopher Wines for a high-end East Coast distributor before being lured west in 2006 with the offer of harvest work and an opportunity for hands-on experience at the winery. After several years developing his skills at wineries elsewhere in California, he returned to Appassionata Estate and J. Christopher Wines, in Newberg, Oregon, full time as an assistant winemaker.

A, Harvest. I love it. It’s stressful, it’s hard, it’s exhausting, but at the same time, there’s so much to enjoy about this work. This is not something everyone gets to do, and frankly, not everyone is able to do it because it is so demanding. Blending is another one of my favorite parts of winemaking. This is another thing I find stressful because it is so subjective, and you can’t rely just on the analytics. You’re entering a creative atmosphere you can’t just apply rules to.
Q, I saw where Appassionata Estate joined the La Place de Bordeaux. What is the significance of that?are very selective and are looking for wines with a prestigious pedigree. But if your wine is selected, then La Place provides access to an international network of fine wine dealers and a recognition that your wine stands alongside the other truly great wines of the world.
