TERRACE — A British Columbia First Nation has agreed to a draft treaty with the federal and provincial governments that would give it more than 38,000 hectares of land in the province's northwest.
Chief Glenn Bennett of the Kitselas First Nation says in a statement that he is pleased to reach a positive conclusion to the treaty process, which has been underway for decades. The Kitselas First Nation has a population of about 740 people with reserves and territory that surrounds Terrace and the Skeena River.
He said there are still some"minor issues" that need to be worked on, but all sides have been able to “substantially conclude our negotiations." Premier David Eby told an unrelated news conference on Monday that he's confident the treaty process will provide clarity around boundaries of First Nation land, and that his government will continue to work with neighbouring nations on treaties of their own.
