Glossy visions of an autonomous future always seem just out of reach. But two insiders say the technology is available on farms, and on clear, dry streets.
Both Kelman and Donnellan say that understanding how humans interact with autonomy will be crucial to guaranteeing both safety and successful adoption. “The companies that are doing this, that are worth their salt, kind of ironically put the human at the center of their robotic innovation,” Donnellan says.
According to Kelman, companies that are working on self-driving cars can learn not only from successes in other industries such as agriculture but from one another. She points out that Motional shares data gathered from autonomous driving with other companies. She says that approach, which is gaining momentum in Europe, could accelerate development of the technology.
Donnellan argues that an ongoing shortage of farm hands makes robotic tractors necessary. “We're relieving people of tough and dangerous jobs,” she says. “But the real issue is a labor shortage problem.” Kelman paints a more complex picture of automation’s impact on the taxi industry. She says autonomy will help Lyft expand its ride-hail operations, leading to more jobs for human drivers even as robo-taxis become more common.
Kelman also suggests that new jobs will be created, for cleaning and servicing autonomous vehicles, for example. “There is a lot of room for that pie to grow,” she says. “We believe drivers are going to have even more earning opportunities.”
