Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth issued a statement Friday following the controversy surrounding transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney's partnership with Bud Light.

“We never intended to be part of a discussion that divides people," the statement titled"Our Responsibility to America" read."We are in the business of bringing people together over a beer."The internet almost broke April 1 when the face of arguably the most famous transgender figure on the planet appeared on a can of Bud Light.

The fallout from the partnership with Mulvaney has dealt blows to both Anheuser-Busch's finances and reputation.Whitworth said he feels a responsibility to ensure"every consumer feels proud of the beer" his company brews, according to his statement. "I care deeply about this country, this company, our brands and our partners. I spend much of my time traveling across America, listening to and learning from our customers, distributors and others."
