‘There’ll be strikes, and more airport chaos… I don’t think I’ve ever seen the airport more busy than it is right now. Why didn’t the airlines prepare?'
If people do look suspicious – not just as a potential terrorist threat, but if they’re travelling on fake tickets – we call management, discreetly. You have to have your wits about you. And you have to be very alert, too, because the airport is always so busy.
A lot of check-in is done online these days, but on long-haul flights people still have to check-in their luggage, so we haven’t seen any decrease in passenger numbers. It’s exhausting. By the end of the day, I can’t face one more person who asks for a window seat, or if they can sit together. “No!” I want to shout, but don’t.
The flipside to those awkward and annoyed customers are those who watch us dealing with the argumentative ones as they rant and rave, and when they come forward they tell us just how appreciative they are for what we do, how they don’t envy us our jobs, and how sorry they feel for us having to tolerate this day in day out.
Like everybody else, I’m hoping to get away this summer with my family, but I’m not so sure it’ll happen. This summer is going to be difficult for all of us. There’ll be strikes, and more airport chaos. I don’t know why the airlines let go of so many people. They knew that air travel would come back post-pandemic. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the airport more busy than it is right now.
