Last year, Pennsylvania saw 2,817 mosquitos test positive for West Nile; locally, this included 121 in Cumberland County and 81 in Dauphin County,Pennsylvania also saw 34 confirmed West Nile cases in humans in 2022, including three deaths, according to DEP numbers. Mosquitos contract West Nile by feeding on infected birds, which also carry the disease; mosquitos then transmit the disease to humans and some other animals. The DEP also collects West Nile tests for horses, which represent the majority of non-human mammal infections. West Nile does not spread person to person.
