A live cam by Duke Farms in Hillsborough showed a new bald eagle egg, the second of 2023. The bald eagle population in New Jersey has soared after almost becoming extinct decades ago.
for 2022 recorded 250 active nests — those that produce eggs — where 335 young eagles, or eaglets, hatched.The two eggs at the Duke Farms nature preserve are a positive sign, said Thom Almendinger, Duke Farms’ director of natural resources and agroecology.that have been raised and fledged, or flown, from the nest since 2005, according to the nature preserve.
For the past several years Duke Farms has seen about two eggs laid in the nest each season. The public can keep an eye on the eggs through theIt takes about five weeks for the eggs to hatch, meaning Duke Farms might see new eagles by March. After that, it can take 10 to 12 weeks for them to fledge and leave the nest.
The statewide eagle population increase is an “inspiration to all of us,” state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette said in a statement. LaTourette said the increase is a “direct result of strong environmental protection laws, firm partnerships, innovative scientific techniques — and the dedication of many volunteers who devote much of their time to monitoring and protecting eagles.”in the Garden State, according to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey.
