Coast Guard crews from Canada and the U.S. are searching the waters of the Atlantic off the coast of Newfoundland Monday, in the wake of reports that a submarine carrying passengers on an expedition to view the wreck of the Titanic has gone missing.
According to media reports, the vessel, a five-person manned submersible designed to take people to depths of 4,000 metres, went missing during a Sunday dive to the iconic wreck, which sits at a depth of 3,800 metres, some 600 kilometres east of Newfoundland.
“Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax is providing assistance as required,” said Fisheries and Oceans Canada spokesperson Victoria Waizmann. “On Monday, JRCC Halifax tasked a Canadian Forces fixed-wing aircraft as well as the Canadian Coast Guard Ship. The vessel was on program off eastern Newfoundland and departed for the search area.”
“We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely,” the company said in a statement to BBC News. “Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families.”
